Our Motivation for Organizing a Climate Strike
One of the most well known names in climate justice is Greta Thunberg, a 16 year old girl from Sweden. For climate activists young and old, including members of Students For Sustainability, Greta is an inspirational leader providing hope for many. Greta started the “Friday’s For Future” slogan and movement, where every Friday, students around the world are encouraged to walk out of school and protest to bring attention towards the climate crisis our world is currently experiencing; one that has jeopardized our future. Friday, September 20, is the designated global climate strike date, an event that our group will be involved with! During our most recent meeting, Sunday, September 15, our group created posters to use at the strike. Students For Sustainability will be meeting outside City Hall, in downtown Omaha, from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m for the strike this Friday, September 20. Following the strike, we will walk to Hardy Coffee Co to write letters to our representatives and elected officials, urging them to act. An amazing new relationship our group has recently made is with the organization Food Not Bombs, who will be providing food to members of our group attending the strike. A volunteer from the local chapter of the organization stated that their food is always vegan or vegetarian, and available to everyone. They also said that the group participates in nonviolence and noncooperation pursuit of social change, hence their involvement with providing food for our members protesting. Students For Sustainability welcomes any and all youth in Omaha to attend the strike on Friday, where we will be raising awareness for the climate crisis, and even passing out cute new buttons that support our cause!
